National Grid and RTE have jointly contracted UltraMAP to provide monitoring services for the IFA Interconnector in partnership with 24/7 monitoring experts SeaGard Limited. UltraMAP and SeaGard will use AssetMonitor 24/7 to help protect IFA from vessel damage.
Interconnexion France-Angleterre (“IFA”) is a 2,000MW high voltage direct current (HVDC) electrical interconnector between the British and French transmission systems and was commissioned in 1986. It is approximately 70km in length, with 45km of subsea cable.
The British landing point for the subsea cables is near Folkestone, Kent, from where underground cables connect to Sellindge converter station and then on to the GB transmission system. The French landing point for the subsea cables is near Calais, from where underground cables connect to Les Mandarins converter station and then on to the French transmission system.
National Grid Interconnectors Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of National Grid Plc and jointly owns and operates the interconnector with Réseau de Transport d'Electricité (“RTE”), the French Transmission System Operator.
Capacity is offered for sale to Eligible Users, separately in the direction Great Britain to France and France to Great Britain, through auctions for different contractual periods.
