The Challenge

Telstra is a leading Australia-based tier-one telecommunications and information services company. From their headquarters in Hong Kong, they provide customers with a range of solutions across data, voice, satellite and managed network services. They own and operate a pan-Asian submarine cable network that has 21 cable landing stations and extends from India to the US.

The Solution

AssetMonitor began by protecting Telstra’s cables landing in Singapore, and soon expanded to also incorporate cables landing in Hong Kong from the South China Sea. We alert them to any vessel exhibiting potentially dangerous behaviour so they can initiate evasive action.

Customer Success

“It works! Preventing potential cable faults, particularly from indiscriminate anchoring, is an integral part of overall preventive maintenance to keep operating costs down.” Howard Hoo. Senior Manager

Hong Kong and Singapore

The Challenge

Global Cloud Xchange owns the world’s largest private undersea cable system spanning 67,000 route kms. It's used by 40 key business markets around the world. Global Cloud Xchange needed protection for the segments of the FALCON fibre-optic cable that lies in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf connecting Oman, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and Iran.

The Solution

AssetMonitor has been watching and averting vessel interference along the FALCON cable since 2012. Our 24/7 monitoring support allows Global Cloud Xchange to rest easy, and our monthly reports provide a pattern of vessel behaviour which can be used as additional research.

Customer Success

“We have found AssetMonitor as provided by UltraMAP to be very responsive to our requirements. The fully monitored AssetMonitor system provided by UltraMAP makes vessels aware of the presence of our cables in the Persian/Arabian Gulf,  hence proactively reducing risk of damage.” Kevin Biddulph - Marine Operations Manager

Persian Gulf

The Challenge

Channel Island Electricity Grid has two 90,000 volt cables running along the sea bed from France to Jersey to Guernsey; supplying power and fibre optic communications to a population of more than 160,000.

The Solution

AssetMonitor provides a 100km long and, at its widest, a 2km wide protection zone around these cables. We monitor vessel activity in the busy Channel, informing CIEG of any potential trespassing before it occurs, therefore crucially avoiding damage to their subsea assets.

Customer Success

“Our key objective is to provide greater security for the critical infrastructure off the Channel Islands. AssetMonitor helps us to do this.” Sally-Ann David. Director

Channel Islands

The Challenge

Royal Dutch Telecom (KPN) jointly manages the TAT-14 transatlantic subsea fibre optic cable system, connecting the USA with UK and Europe and UK-NL14 that directly connects The Netherlands to the UK. KPN is responsible for the protection of the Dutch segments of both of these cables that land at Katwijk.

The Solution

AssetMonitor protects 485km of subsea fibre optic cables, therefore forming one protective link in a much bigger chain of international protection companies. As KPN's responsibility grows, so too does our role in their asset protection.

Customer Success

"We’ve used AssetMonitor to protect our cables for a long time. And the support you get from UltraMAP is very good; they’re always open to ideas."  Maarten Van Der Paard. Maintenance Offshore Liaison Officer

Netherlands

The Challenge

Interoute is an international telecommunications giant, and owner of Europe’s largest cloud platform. They have numerous subsea fibre optic cables responsible for connecting European business centres to global network partners.

The Solution

AssetMonitor not only protects all of Interoute’s Concerto 2 cable between Sizewell in the UK and Zandvoort in the Netherlands, we also provide support to their staff in the event of an incident.

Customer Success

“AssetMonitor's ability to identify and contact ships in close proximity to our cables gives us exactly the security and protection we need.” Patrick Sheridan. Director

The Challenge

Verizon is a global business that designs, builds and operates networks, information systems and mobile technologies. These help worldwide businesses and governments to expand reach, increase agility and maintain longevity. Although Verizon manages subsea cables all over the world, they were particularly concerned about vessel traffic in the busy North Sea.

The Solution

AssetMonitor helps to protect Verizon's Ulysses-2 cable, running from Lowestoft in the UK to Ijmuiden in the Netherlands. We seamlessly integrate our existing AIS system, with an AIS receiver installed by the client.

Customer Success

“AssetMonitor is helpful in warning off vessels that may damage undersea cables. They provide evidence in repair claims when damage occurs and assist with targeted marine liaison and cable awareness activities.”  Andy Palmer-Felgate. Lead Consultant Engineer

The Challenge

Wave Hub is a subsea electrical grid connection point off the north coast of Cornwall, providing the electrical infrastructure to support developers of Marine Energy Converter devices. Wave Hub allows developers to test devices in a monitored marine environment and export generated electricity via the Western Power Distribution substation at Hayle.

The Solution

AssetMonitor protects 8 km sq of seabed, 55 metres beneath the surface. This area, 10 miles off the coast of St. Ives, is home to Wave Hub's subsea electrical grid connection point.

Customer Success

"AssetMonitor is a powerful safeguarding and safety management software package. We use the tool principally as a marine coordination platform, but the asset-monitoring and protection are a vital secondary function." Julius Besterman, Marine Operations Manager

United Kingdom

The Challenge

BBL Company is a joint venture of three partners: Gasunie BBL B.V. - E.ON Ruhrgas BBL B.V. - Fluxys BBL B.V. The company constructed and now operates the BBL pipeline which transports natural gas from Balgzand in the Netherlands, to Bacton in the UK. Some parts of the pipeline are vulnerable to damage in the busy North Sea.

The Solution

AssetMonitor has protected the Balgzand-Bacton gas pipeline since November 2013. Our tailored flexibility allows the BBL Company to implement a complex and varied set of rules that mirror the needs of the pipeline construction.

The Challenge

MECMA (Mediterranean Cable Maintenance Agreement) is a consortium of over 40 cable owners that manages the maintenance of 37,000 km's of submarine cables. They stretch from Gibraltar to east of the Mediterranean sea, including the Black Sea and Red Sea down to Djibouti. The consortium wanted to address the threat to a number of their cables in the Sicily Strait.

The Solution

AssetMonitor has protected the interests of the MECMA consortium in the Sicily Straits and Southern Mediterranean since 2014. Telecom Italia Sparkle, GO Malta, Med Nautilus, Vodafone Malta and owners responsible for the IMEWE, SEA-ME-WE3 and SEA-ME-WE4 cables are all involved in the complex monitoring process.

The Challenge

Globacom aspire to build Africa’s biggest and best telecommunications network, with millions of subscribers in Nigeria, the Republic of Benin and Ghana. As part of their aspiration, they made history as the first single company to build a high-capacity sub-marine fibre-optic cable. It’s called Glo-1 and runs from the UK to Nigeria.

The Solution

AssetMonitor protects the landing of Glo-1 at Lagos in Nigeria and at Accra in Ghana. Our carefully constructed protection zones, monitored 24/7, prevent vessels from anchoring on the cables or fishing through them.
